New high: over 17,000 new infections in Austria.
Ten new deaths linked to Covid-19. 96,548 active cases currently.
After more than 10,000 new infections on Monday and more than 11,000 on Tuesday, 17,006 new infections were registered in Austria today (Wednesday). This represents a new high in the pandemic and is above the average of 10,666 over the past seven days. The previous high was reported on November 19 of last year with 15,809 new cases within 24 hours. As a reminder, Austria entered its fourth lockdown a few days later.
Such a sharp increase was predicted by the Covid forecasting consortium a week ago. The experts assumed up to 17,000 new infections and a seven-day incidence of more than 1,000.
The number of active cases rises to 96,548, with 904,584 new PCR tests performed in the past 24 hours. That gives a positive rate of 1.88 percent.
However, there were problems with the recording and evaluation in the past few days. An adaptation should prevent a test chaos on the coming weekend. Read more here.
The seven-day incidence has risen to 838.79.
There are also ten new deaths associated with Covid-19 infection to report. Thus, the pandemic has claimed 13,882 lives in Austria so far.
It is still unclear whether the Omicron variant will have an impact on hospital occupancy rates. Most recently, the number of patients in hospitals has been stable. There are currently 909 people in the hospital, down by 19 patients from the previous day. 242 people are being cared for in intensive care units, down by 14 from yesterday.
